Patchouli (Pogostemon cablin Benth.) Is a tropical shrub producing a kind of essential oil which is called the same (patchouli oil). In international trade, known as patchouli oil patchouli oil (from the Tamil language patchai (green) and ellai (leaf), because of the oil distilled from the leaves). The smell of patchouli oil known as 'heavy' and 'strong' and has been used for centuries as a perfume (perfume) and the ingredients of incense or incense on the eastern tradition. The selling price of patchouli oil are among the highest when compared with other essential oils.

Patchouli oil is categorized in the essential oil with its main component is patchoulol. Leaves and flowers contain patchouli oil, but people usually get the patchouli oil from steam distillation of dried leaves (as in clove oil.) In Indonesia, patchouli oil is also distilled from a close relative of the original patchouli from Indonesia, Java patchouli (Pogostemon heyneani), which has a lower quality.
Patchouli oil which generally had higher levels of PA both above 30%, clear yellow, and has a distinctive fragrance and hard to break. This type of essential oil obtained by using steam distillation techniques yielded dry steam-producing machine (boiler) that passed into the reaction tank (autoclave), then steam will penetrate dry patchouli raw materials and steam generated forwarded to the separation to be the separation of water vapor with patchouli oil by steam distillation system. Good patchouli oil is produced from the reaction tube and distillation equipment made of stainless steel (stainless steel) and equipment is only used for extracting patchouli only (no alternated with other raw materials).
Because of the nature of the strong aroma, this oil is widely used in perfume industry. One third of the world wear perfume oil products, including more than half of perfumes for men. This oil is also used as a deodorizer toilet paper, laundry detergent mixture, and air freshener. More traditional functions as the main ingredient incense and insect repellent clothing.
The smell of patchouli oil is considered 'luxury' according to the perception of Europeans, but people agree that the scent is soothing.
